Ian Cato is a Los Angeles–based painter and sculptor whose work explores the increasingly porous boundary between fiction and reality. As the artist notes, “All my favorite sci-fi movies are coming true.” Working within a city shaped by the mythology of cinema, Cato creates synthetic landscapes and alien-like artifacts informed by science fiction, fantasy, internet folklore, and contemporary visual culture. These influences are filtered through an art historical lineage spanning from Hieronymus Bosch and Hito Steyerl to Ashley Bickerton and Raul Guerrero.

Using a gonzo-style approach to sampling and reinterpretation, Cato’s paintings and sculptures assemble constellations of symbols, insignia, and pop iconography into layered compositions that blur the line between artifact and simulation. Obscure references and fragments of familiar culture converge into abstractions that feel simultaneously ancient, speculative, and contemporary. Existing somewhere between map, mirage, and relic, Cato’s work evokes a mysterious yet recognizable replica of the present moment.
